When you upgraded the system to Sierra the only version of iPhoto that will work is iPhoto 9.6.1. However, in order to obtain that version you must have downloaded some version of iPhoto 9 from the App Store prior to the system upgrade.

What version of iPhoto do you have and from what system version did you upgrade from.

Mac OS X 10.9 is about 4 years old is almost obsolete. Not only that, Apple has replaced iPhoto with a new app named Photos from Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite onwards, to be compatible with iCloud and the new Photos app on your iPhone. I'd recommend to upgrade the OS X to latest macOS version. The latest is macOS 10.13 High Sierra. And continuing to use iPhoto, which I much prefer to Photos. (I know Apple doesn't support iPhoto anymore). I just got a new camera, a Panasonic G85. I tried to import raw files into iPhoto, but they weren't recognized. Found I needed to upgraded to High Sierra to get the raw support. IPhoto still won't recognize the raw files.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1


If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?


iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.
